Kingpin Review
By Xatrix Entertainment
Written by Zeke "Puppet" Templin

Xatrix Entertainment, the makers of the infamous "Redneck Rampage" series and the popular commercial mission-pack for Quake 2 have made their masterpiece, Kingpin. This game, using an altered version of iD Software's Quake 2 engine, is amazing! I was definately in for a suprise when I ripped open the box. I was one of a few people that didn't care to download the 100 meg demo for a game from a company that had before, made some pretty mediocre games. However, my opinion about Xatrix had been changed forever by Kingpin.

Single-player

This game, as I said above, has wonderful single-player, I especially enjoyed the character to NPC (non-playing character) interaction. It was fun swearing to some guy and having him swear back (enough instigation for me to whip out my pipe and pop a .. err. pipe in his head.) The story, although it wasn't wonderful, still had some substance to it. It's your basic bad-guy turns good after plot to kill is seen by said bad-guy.

Single-player levels flowed well because instead of being air-dropped some place you moved level to level via a stair case or a sewer and could just as easily go back the previous level by going back to where you came from (great for those times when you should have gotten that item and didn't) I won't ruin it for you but the ending was pretty weak compared to the rest of the story and leaves enough space for at least a mission-pack and another sequel or two.

Multi-player

The first time I played this game online was at a LAN and it was A LOT of fun. It has the excitement of Quake 2 Deathmatch mixed with the a darker feel of a game like Thief. The weapons are great for multiplayer and add another level. The actual level-design is wonderful for multiplayer. One of the reasons this is true is because of the roof-top to roof-top and roof-top to ground style fighting you can do. The flame-thrower in Kingpin is great fun during multiplayer matches. Gotta love catching someone on fire and then blowing their head off with a shotgun. ;)

Originality

This game is stock full of orginality. Unlike most other First Person Shooters this game has an incredibly fun single-player mode. It has a story, characters, and lots of interaction. You bind a key to say either a nice compliment or a scathing insult. You can either woo a young lady or pick a fight with a 6' 5" ape of a man. I've also never heard so much swearing in a game in my entire life. Although this doesn't bother me I had to keep my 10 and 11 year old siblings out of the room because of the constant cussing. I also enjoyed the urban map design, which was pulled of perfectly unlike I've ever seen. Maps are well balanced as is the weapon placement.

Fun

This game is the epitomy of fun. With great SP and Multiplayer action this game is one of the best of this year (so far.) Lots of multiplayer servers are popping up everywhere so you can play to your hearts content.
