Note: This is an unofficial/unlicensed conversion. This project should be considered the highest form of flattery for one of the greatest television programs of all time--Comedy Central's South Park.

SPQ2 Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When will the South Park Quake II Total Conversion be available?
A. Who knows? We've run into liscensing and legal problems and don't know when everything will be worked out.

Q. Will I be able to buy SPQ2 in stores?
A. No. Certain licensing and copyright issues prevent anyone from distributing any Quake 2 executable in any form other than electronic distrubtion without licensing the game engine, and that is something reserved for the big game publishing houses. Although we have received some unofficial support from the creators of South Park, we do not have a license to use the images/concepts/sounds from South Park, and profiting from them in anyway would be illegal, therefore SPQ2 will be freely available via download only.

Q. What is a 'TC'?
A. A 'TC', or Total Conversion, is a modification of the game Quake II, by id Software. A 'TC' typically would include all new player models, sound effects, textures, and style of gameplay. The 3D engine, written by id Software, is not modified in anyway, and is required to play the 'TC', therefore a full (registered) copy of Quake II is required for any 'TC', except for those few that have licensed the Quake engine, such as Half-Life by Valve.

Q. Do I need a copy of Quake II to play South Park Quake II?
A. Yes. See the above question/answer.

Q. Does a Total Conversion or mod replace my Quake II game?
A. No. A mod or TC installs into its own subdirectory under the Quake II directory. To activate a mod or TC you either add "+set game spq2", where spq2 is the name of the directory that the TC is installed to to the command line or shortcut. If you have installed the 3.12 Quake II patch from id (which you will have to if you wish to play most mods/TC's), you can activate the console by pressing the 'tilde' key and type "game spq2", where spq2 is the name of the directory the mod is installed to. To return to normal Quake II, either restart the game or type "game baseq2" in the console. The original Quake II game remains completely intact.

Q. How do I know this program won't f*** up my computer or contain a virus?
A. You don't. We have discussed involving a third party, such as Open Quake, to verify the code to be safe. The sad truth is you never know if a file you download from the internet is safe, but the odds that you'll encounter a true virus are rare if you're careful. Keep in mind we have nothing to gain by distributing malicious code. Our reputations in the Quake community would be severely tainted.

Q. Will Software Rendering Mode be supported, or will I have to have a 3D card to run SPQ2?
A. Yes, software mode is supported. Since SPQ2 uses the Quake II engine, by nature it will support software rendering, and any other display adapters that id or the card manufacturers make drivers available for Quake II.

Q. Will SPQ2 feature actual sounds and voices from the television program?
A. Yes. 100% of the sound effects and voices will be sampled from the actual show. That is our intention, anyway.

Q. What is the mailing list for?
A. We will use the mailing list to spread word of major news announcements and release information.

Q. Is this a single player game?
A. Not at this time. The planned release will be a deathmatch game only, with three or more levels suited for deathmatch. A single player game may be considered depending on the success of this project, and how well the team is still getting along ;)

Q. What software tools did you use to make the models?
A. Most of the models are built first in 3DStudio Max, then ported into Q2 Modeller, where they are animated and tweaked. Most of the skins and textures for the game are done with Photoshop 4.0.

Q. Is there a penalty for early withdrawal?
A. Who knows?

Q. Will I get to kill Kenny?
A. Of course! But he will get the point for the kill, not you!
